Late onset Alzheimer's disease case-control study 2000
UDBN partner:Prof J Williams (University of Wales Cardiff)
Our collaboration aims to collect and make available DNA from a sample of 2,000 well-characterised, late-onset Alzheimer’s disease cases and 2,000 age-matched controls, ascertained from populations with high ethnic stability in the UK and Southern Ireland. We will also produce a database of genetic and operationally defined clinical information, using a diagnostically validated assessment methods to facilitate the identification of phenotypic/genotypic relationships. We will also seek to facilitate the collection of post-mortem materials from the samples ascertained. Alzheimer’s disease is a common, debilating disorder which is estimated to cost as much as £1 billion per annum and which is likely to increase in prevalence in the future. Identifying genes for AD provides a powerful means of understanding disease development and thus provide a platform for novel therapeutic innovation. Our sample will provide a powerful resource to study genetic association in candidate genes, to map candidate regions using linkage disequilibrium and to explore a variety a variety of specific phenotypic/genotypic relationships. The sample will be easily accessible to approved studies via customised website and will provide an unlimited amount of DNA.
