Registration: the key to data and DNA

See the data

Data on samples and phenotypes can be accessed via "My LabSpace" using the username and password provided to registered users. To register, click here.

In My LabSpace you can

  • Access phenotypic (clinical) data on the collection of interest. The data is presented in summary form. By selecting different phenotypic characteristics, you can create the profile of interest to you.
  • Access sample data. Find out if DNA and or cell lines are available for this profile.
  • You will in due course be able also to access summary genotyping data.

Your analysis of this data will allow you to decide whether you want to investigate some DNA samples.

With an MRC-funded collection you can collaborate with the appropriate collector consortium. If you decide to seek a collaboration, then use the Collaboration Management Service in My LabSpace. This speeds discussions, ensures that no member of the collector consortium is inadvertently left out of the loop and helps mediation where needed. The Collaboration Management Service software is open source for academic researchers. It is available without charge from Azura Group (www.azuragroup.com).

Plan the investigation

When you have reached agreement to collaborate with the collector consortium, you should:

  1. Jointly prepare a written proposal. Make sure the proposal specifies precisely each and every test you wish to perform, the platform you intend to use and the amount of DNA per test  recommended by the platform manufacturer. For more details on the contents of your written proposal, click here.
  2. Send the written proposal to administrator@dna-network.ac.uk.
  3. Prepare and save your sample wish list online. Saving your wish list prioritises your request.
  4. To maintain your priority status, the written proposal must arrive at UDBN within 10 days of submitting the wish list . The written proposal undergoes assessment by UDBN's Technical Committee. If the request for DNA is approved, then UDBN reserves aliquots for your use for one year while you get funding support.
  5. Submit your written proposal for funding support in the usual way (i.e.  via peer review). If no funding is needed, submit your proposal to the appropriate Disease Committee (details will be provided by the collector consortium).
  6. Ensure the proposal has any necessary ethics approval.
  7. Once you have scientific (and ethics) approval and your funding is in place, then send administrator@dna-network.ac.uk the documentation demonstrating this.
  8. UDBN can now initiate release of samples. This release is covered by a Materials Transfer Agreement. Note that this agreement requires that you enable access to genotyping data by the publication date.  Aliquots are released on payment of a charge to cover costs of sample replenishment (the standard charge is 85p per microgram) and of shipping.
